Animated Films.
Hey guys, what are your all time favorite animated films? Grin I'll start with my favorite 1986 japanese animated film.

10/10 One of the best animes that ever existed.

Castle in the Sky is a heartwarming bliss-out of a movie, full of spirit and fun, and reminds you of the kind of movies Hollywood used to make long ago. Here is a swashbuckling picture that's worth its weight in popcorn. The world of Castle in the Sky is an inventive mix of futuristic and Victorian-era technology. Pazu's town is based on a Welsh mining town, with houses cut across giant mountain gorges, locomotives, and Model T's. It all fits into the spirit of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, and, yes, Swift. Why does so much animation, Japanese and American, follow such dull, slavish formulas when such uncharted territory remains un-mined? And despite the non stop action, there are deep meditative lessons that lurks beneath worthy of viewer's reflection.

The final act becomes quite serious, with reflections on nature and war and human frailty; the scenes on Flying castle are inspired, in part, by Miyazaki's Nausicaa books, and are genuinely moving. Miyazaki is an entertainer in the grandest sense. The film is undeniably a masterpiece .

The Iron Giant

Touching, intelligent, timeless, and brilliant: these are a few of the adjectives that are often used to describe Brad Bird's masterpiece of animation. While this movie may be set in what seems like a 1950s cold war setting, complete with the paranoia, the message applies forever. The characters are brought to life by the well written script, and in the end you truly care about The Iron Giant.

Anime Films Short Update

THIS WEEK IN LIVE-ACTION ANIME ADAPTATION NEWS

Hardcore anime fan (and occasional director/producer) Steven Spielberg announced this week plans to adapt the sci-fi anime classic, Ghost in the Shell, as a live-action movie... in 3-D, even, via DreamWorks and co-producer Avi Arad (formerly Marvel's big shot movie guy), whose first post-Marvel project was Bratz: The Movie. The cyberpunk thriller is often cited as an influence on things like The Matrix, so its time for actually getting an American adaptation is probably due, but one has to wonder if it won't be one of those situations (Watchmen, I'm looking at you) where the "originator" ends up being overshadowed by projects that it technically inspired, but was adapted to film/TV/etc after.

In other anime-ish news, M. Night Shyamalan announced officially this week his plans for The Last Airbender (which may have his name attached at the beginning), dropping the word "Avatar" (which the TV show has) to avoid confusion with James Cameron's Avatar. Shymalan is saying that The Last Airbender will be his (live action) homage to the works of animation master Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away, The Princess Mononoke), who is sort of famous for not having twist endings, so that will be an obvious departure for Shyamalan right there. This fantasy saga, about four warring armies, each representing one of the elements is aiming to invade theaters on July 2nd, 2010 via Paramount/Nickelodeon, grabbing one of the summer's hottest tentpole release dates.

Re: Animated Films.
Another short animated film update -

The English title of Miyazaki's latest has now been officially announced as 'Ponyo on a Cliff by the Sea'. So a little longer than first thought. The film will hit Japanese cinemas on July 19th and there is also a new teaser poster (below). It shows the scene that makes up most of the trailer, which will be shown in Japan from this weekend.

Also there is an XML gallery at GhibliWorld in which you can look around the island on which the film will take place. The notes are also translated into English -
