Re: Car & Driver - USA Speedways- Car Racing Sport
How much NASCAR drivers make ?
NASCAR Drivers Salaries Most people know that the National Football League (NFL) is the most popular sport on TV, but it may raise a few eyebrows to hear that the second highest-rated sport is NASCAR --the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing. No longer just a heartland sport, NASCAR is broadcast in over 150 countries. With all this television coverage come the big money and high annual salaries. Unlike NFL salaries, however, NASCAR drivers salaries are closely-guarded secrets (as mentioned on blog.vcu.edu/nascar). That said, we do have some info on NASCAR drivers salaries, thanks to SportsIllustrated.cnn.com. SI says the highest-paid driver in 2005 was Dale Earnhardt Jr., whose annual salary and earnings totaled $5,761,830, but that's not all. His endorsements earned $20,000,000, bringing his sub-total compensation to $25,761,830. That number doesn't include sales of Dale Earnhardt Jr. merchandise and earnings from the racing company that he owns. SI says his total take in '05 would approach $50 million! The second $25 million is really for his role as a business owner, not directly for Dale Jr.'s work as a race car driver. While there are substantial risks to racing (Dale Sr. died on the race track), the pay is still impressive. In NASCAR, drivers are essentially free agents who sign with teams that have an owner. The owner makes money via corporations which pay big bucks for those stickers (sponsorships) that are plastered all over race cars. The size and location of the sticker determines how much a corporation pays the team owner. The most expensive location is on the hood of a race car, most prominent during TV broadcasts. It is sponsorships (and the NASCAR television schedule), not prize winnings, that mostly fuel NASCAR. Fastest lap in Speedways-------- source:sporting news ,October 5, 2007 The fastest lap of the year came as Reed Sorenson completed Lap 109 at 202.752. Rounding out the top five -- and remember, this is for the whole season -- was Three of the four fastest individual laps of the Nextel Cup season came on the same circuit -- the 87th lap of the spring race at Talladega. Matt Kenseth turned the second-fastest lap of the season at 202.485 mph, followed by Scott Riggs at 202.363 and Greg Biffle at 201.902. David Stremme on at 201.529. |

I have not seen this Speedways in person.....I just watch the race on TV all the time. I'm not sure if I will be racing at all this year. As you know, I'll be a senior next year and will be too busy for graduation and searching for college. Anyway, here's something about racing! Racing is not something I do to become popular, make money, or attract the girls (even though they are always fascinated by that).. its just something I do because I love the adrenaline rush and simply go fast while in control. Those who don't wake up at 6 AM during the weekends to drive to the track to race or drive 3 hours to go practice for a whole day, while never having time on the weekends for friends or parties cause I'm too busy riding, don't know how much the sport means to me. Most would say "I can do it.. that its easy all you do is sit on it and step on the gas pedal" don't have a clue about it. They are very ignorant. I'm sure they have never tried going out on the track with the temperature being around 80-100 degrees or doing a 60 mph turn with 3 guys right next to you, not thinking about what's gonna happen in the next corner but just haulin ass trying to beat them there. Now you tell me that doesn't take muscle or skill or guts. ![]() This is a very dangerous sport. I'm sure we all know the risks that come with racing, but if there weren't any risks than anyone could hop in and go pro. Just because were out for a while because of a crash or an injury doesn't mean were done it means get ready cause I'm coming back faster and more determined than ever. I may never be the next Michael Schumacher but I push myself to try it anyways. Racing is just raw power and determination. Not only that, racing is also a very expensive sport. |
