A symbol of a STAR with the artist name is place in the pavement or sidewalk.It is embedded with more than 2,000 five-pointed stars featuring the names of not only human celebrities but fictional characters honored by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce for their contributions to the entertainment industry. The Walk of Fame is maintained by the self-financing Hollywood Historic Trust.
The first star, awarded on February 9, 1960, went to Joanne Woodward.

That was in 1969.  The Internet dates back to the 1950s and 60s, although few of us knew of it then as it was part of the American defence system. The seed of what would become the internet was created by ARPANET in 1969. It was basically a group of researchers working for the Department of Defense.
