INTRAVENOUS THERAPY

Definition: is the insertion of a needle or catheter/cannula into a vein, based on the physician's written prescription. The needle or catheter/cannula is attached to a sterile tubing and a fluid container to provide medication and fluid.

Objectives:
1. Serves as guide for nurses in providing safe and quality nursing care to patients, relative to IV therapy.
2. Promote the application of principles underlying the administration of IV Therapy.
3. Recognize the ethico-legal implication of IV Therapy.

Indications of IV Therapy:
1. To maintain hydration or correct dehydration in patients unable to tolerate sufficient volumes of oral fluids/medication.
2. Parenteral nutrition
3. Administration of drugs, i.e. chemotherapy
4. Transfusion of blood components.

Complications:
1. Infiltration
2. Thrombophlebitis
3. Circulatory overdose
4. Air embolism
5. Catheter embolism
6. Systemic infection
7. Speed shock
8. Allergic infection
9. Infetion of venipuncture site
10. pulmonary congestion
