Action taken in another case against hospital where baby of Spain's first Swine Flu v
The alleged mistake made by the Gregorio Marañón was to operate on a patient's healthy eye and not the damaged one

The parents of a 13 year old boy who had eye surgery at the Gregorio Marañón Hospital in Madrid are claiming compensation after the surgical team operated on his healthy eye and not the one which had been damaged in a fight at school.

The teenager was attacked by another boy and was admitted to hospital on 28th July after being told by doctors at the local health centre that his right eye had been knocked out of place with the force of the punch. The Gregorio Marañón said he needed surgery to repair a fissure and some of the eye muscles.

The operation was on 10th August, when the parents were told that it had all gone well as the fissure which needed repair was very small. They discovered when they saw their son in the recovery room however that the surgery had, in fact, been performed on his left eye – the healthy one.

Europa Press reports the surgeon admitted the error after checking the patient’s notes and apologised. According to the complaint placed on the family’s behalf by the Patient Ombudsman however, the hospital claims the boy’s left eye also needed surgery, which they see as an attempt to avoid another scandal as happened with baby Rayan. He was the child born by emergency Caesarean section to Spain’s first Swine Flu victim, who died at the Gregorio Marañón two weeks later after being mistakenly being fed baby formula intravenously.

The 13 year old patient in this case is now progressing well after surgery to correct the damage to his right eye last Friday.

' don't be so insecure to that person you think having a better life than you do, coz sometimes, that one thing you're jealous of, is the only thing she has, and of all the fun simple things you enjoy, who knew, she might have been praying so hard to be in your shoes.' - dkny
