• Foils

This tried and true technique involves separating hair into sections, coating them with bleach or color, and then wrapping them in squares of aluminum foil, to ensure color doesn't bleed. Colorist frequently refer to the width of the sections using pasta terms, angel hair for the thinnest highlight, fettuccine for chunkier pieces.



• Balayage

French for ' to sweep ' this term is used when pros handpaint the bleach onto your hair. Though the technique requires added expertise, it often yields more-natural-looking color.



• Lowlights

Colorists often add these slightly darker streaks in order to make highlights look more multidimensional.



• Single Process

The simplest color job, this is when one shade is used all over the head.



• Double Process

Step 1 : Lighten or darken base. Step 2 : Add highlights.
