Pacquiao vs. Solis on April 14
Pacquiao vs. Solis on April 14

Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao will take on undefeated featherweight Mexican Jorge Solis on April 14 at The Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, USA.

Also scheduled in the card is Fil-American Brian Viloria who will go up against Edgar Sosa for the vacant WBC light-flyweight crown. Omar Nino, who has been stripped off the title due to banned substance found in medical tests, will fight whoever wins this bout.

Mexican Jorge 'Travieso' Arce, who will also clash with WBC superfly champion Cristian Mijares.

Popular young Mexican fighter Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, son of the legendary JC Chavez, is also included in the card which will be promoted by Bob Arum's Top Rank.

Jorge "Coloradito" Solis looks fine, in featherweight division. He is a Mexican national featherweight champion, he is undefeated at 32-0-2 with 23 KOs and his younger brother, Ulises "Archie" Solis, is the IBF light flyweight champion. At 126 pounds, he is ranked #2 by the WBC, #4 WBO, #12 WBA and #13 IBF.

“Pacmania” has officially hit San Antonio and it has hit in a big, big way. The box office for the Manny Pacquiao vs. Jorge Solis WBC International super featherweight championship fight opened Saturday at 10 AM, and by the close of business on Sunday, it stood alone as the second-biggest opening weekend for a boxing event in San Antonio history. Bigger than Oscar De La Hoya,s 1997 welterweight title defense against David Kamau, and even bigger than Pacquiao,s 2003 knockout victory of Marco Antonio Barrera. Only the legendary welterweight title fight between Pernell Whitaker and Julio Cesar Chavez in 1993 had a bigger opening.

“Our opening weekend sales nearly grossed $500,000,” said promoter Bob Arum, Chairman of Top Rank. “Not only is Manny Pacquiao boxing,s pound-for-pound most exciting fighter, he is becoming boxing,s pound-for-pound most popular superstar!”

Promoted by Top Rank, this pay-per-view extravaganza will also feature a Mexican civil war between WBC super flyweight champion CRISTIAN MIJARES (30-3-2, 11 KOs), from Gomez Palacio, Mexico, defending his title against two-time world champion and current No. 1 contender JORGE “EL TRAVIESO” ARCE (46-3-1, 35 KOs), from Los Mochis, Mexico; former world champion and current No. 1 contender BRIAN VILORIA (19-1-1, 12 KOs), from Waipahu, Hawaii, taking on No. 2 contender EDGAR SOSA (26-5, 14 KOs), from Mexico City, Mexico, for the vacant WBC light flyweight title; and undefeated contender, JULIO CESAR CHAVEZ, Jr. (29-0-1, 22 KOs), from Culiacan, Mexico, son of Mexican icon Julio Cesar Chavez, in a 10-round welterweight bout.

Tickets for Pacquiao vs. Solis, priced at $300, $200, $100, $75, $50, $35, can be purchased at the Alamodome Box Office, by calling (210) 207-3663 and at http://www.Ticketmaster.com

Dubbed “Republica Enemy No. 1,” Pacquiao, a three-division world champion, has blitzed through the best fighters Mexico had to offer since 2003, including Morales (KO 3, TKO 10), Barrera (TKO 11), Oscar Larios (W 12), Emanuel Lucero (TKO 3), and Hector Velazquez (TKO 6). The only “blemish” was a disputed Draw that many thought he won against Juan Manuel Marquez in 2004, where Pacquiao sent Marquez to the canvas three times in the first round.

Pacquiao, (43-3-2, 33 KOs), from General Santos City, The Philippines, was named “2006 Fighter of the Year” by the Boxing Writers Association of America and The Ring magazine for his two spectacular knockout victories of Mexican icon and three-division champion Erik Morales and his dominating 12-round unanimous 12-round decision over former world champion and current No. 1 contender Oscar Larios. Since The Ring originated the award in 1928, only six fighters below the lightweight division - Henry Armstrong (1937), Willie Pep (,45), Carlos Zarate (,77), Salvador Sanchez (,81), Michael Carbajal (,93), Paulie Ayala (,99) - have been previously selected for the magazine,s top honor. Pacquiao is number seven. The hard-hitting southpaw has only lost once in his last 20 bouts, a close decision in 2005 to Morales in their first encounter.

A proven pay-per-view star, the Pacquiao-Morales trilogy produced over one million pay-per-view sales, a record for the lower weight divisions. The live attendance for their rubber match rumble last November produced a live gate of 18,276, fifth-best on Las Vegas, all-time list.

Solis (32-0-2, 1 ND, 23 KOs), from Guadalajara, Mexico, is the older brother of Ulises “Archie” Solis, the reigning International Boxing Federation junior flyweight champion. A former Mexican super bantamweight champion who vacated the title after three successful title defenses to move up a weight division, Solis has reigned as the Mexican featherweight champion since 2003. He was also the World Boxing Association Fedecentro featherweight champion from 2003-2004. World-rated No. 2 by the WBC and No. 4 by the WBO, Solis has vowed to end Pacquiao,s dominance over Mexican fighters.

I don't know if he's still good when he fights a top-of-the-line super featherweight in Pacquiao.

Lakers’ Kobe planes in amid tight security
Quote:MANILA, Philippines -- American basketball superstar Kobe Bryant flew into the country via a private jet Tuesday night amid protocols said to be more restrictive than those enforced during visits of heads of state, diplomats and other dignitaries.

Only a select group of photographers and television crew were allowed to cover the arrival of Bryant,s party which arrived at past 6 p.m. at the ramp near the International Cargo Terminal of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

Organizers of Bryant,s Manila visit allowed handpicked photographers of selected major broadsheets, the Philippine Daily Inquirer (parent company of INQUIRER.net) included, to cover the National Basketball Association superstar,s arrival for a one-day stop here as part of a promotional Asian tour for the sports brand Nike.

However, strictly no interviews were allowed.

Media coordinators withheld flight details but airport sources said Bryant arrived via a light jet, an 8- to 10-seater Gulf Stream, from Honolulu, Hawaii. The LA Lakers, star reportedly shared the plane with five other passengers.

Bryant,s Manila stop is part of his Supernatural Asia Tour 2007, which launches a Nike basketball footwear named after him, organizers said.

He is expected to mingle with children from a Pampanga elementary school at The Fort in Taguig City at 2 p.m. and then “share his training regimen” with young Filipino basketball players at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City later in the afternoon.

Bryant will then continue his tour in Taipei, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing.

The 6-foot-6 ace is coming off the FIBA Americas tournament, where he was part of the Team USA that bagged the gold medal.

Bryant is also expected to spearhead the American bid to regain lost glory in basketball, a sport where the US used to enjoy dominant status.

But losses in two World Championship tournaments and the 2004 Olympics have knocked the Americans off the throne, although Bryant and Co. are heavily favored again for Beijing 2008.

This is the second time Bryant will be flying to the Philippines, although he was still just a budding superstar during his first visit here.

Bryant showered with affection at start of Asian tour
Quote:MANILA, Philippines -- More than 7,000 miles from home, fans were chanting his name, and Kobe Bryant was loving it.

No controversy. No tough questions. In the basketball-loving Philippines, no one was going to ruffle the feathers of a charismatic icon visiting to promote the sport, encourage kids to pursue their dreams and maybe sell a few pairs of his new line of shoes.

"I love Manila," a beaming Bryant told a crowd that started gathering at 6 a.m. outside a store in Manila, nine hours before he appeared. "The energy here is off the charts."

Bryant, fresh off a gold medal at the FIBA Americas championship, kicked off his five-stop Asian tour Wednesday.

A lot has happened to Bryant since his first trip to Manila a decade ago -- three NBA titles with the Los Angeles Lakers and a rape case that was eventually dismissed but left many wondering if he would ever successfully polish the tarnish off his star.

The Manila public provided the answer. He was even touted as a role model for children, a tag that he didn't try to avoid.

"The important thing to remember when people talk about role models, they assume role models are perfect," Bryant said. "Nobody's perfect."

The key, he said, is not to duplicate mistakes, and to try to give back to the community with charity and efforts to spread the sport.

Bryant was still basking in the success of the U.S. basketball team, which earned favorable comparisons with the first two "Dream Teams" put together after professionals were allowed to compete at the Olympics.

"When you have an opportunity to play for your country, it's even more special," he said. "The whole country gets behind you."

Asked who he would choose to surround himself with if he were Lakers owner Jerry Buss, Bryant said: "Can I assume I'm Bill Gates, too? All of the USA basketball team."

Bryant said he has taken off 20 pounds (10 kg) since the end of the NBA season, partly by paying attention to his diet for the first time.

"My primary focus this summer was defense," he said. "I had to guard smaller, quicker players. I wanted to get back some of the agility I had in 2000," without losing strength.

What has he been eating?

"Grass," Bryant joked, before saying he had to give up fast food and some of his decadent favorites _ apple pie with ice cream, chocolate cake and sugar cookies.

"I can feel the results already," he said.

The Nike store, in Manila's Fort Bonifacio area, was festooned with a poster promoting Bryant's new shoe, the Kobe II.

At P7,000 (about US$150), the shoes represent about six weeks' pay for the average Filipino. But the mostly middle- to upper-class crowd waved his jerseys and raised the old model shoe when he came out of the store. Arms went up as one, cell phones snapping photos.

Construction workers at two adjacent buildings stopped what they were doing and gathered on the roofs or clung to scaffolding as supervisors tried to get them back on the job.

Bryant, who later gave a basketball clinic, laughed as the crowd chanted his name, then "MVP."

He appeared to be most touched when children of a school that is getting a new basketball court, donated by Nike, gave him a framed collection of crayon drawings they had done of him.

"Keep your dreams alive," Bryant said. "Keep going after it."

Mayweather vs. Hatton
Quote:LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Round-by-round action in Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s WBC welterweight title fight with England's Ricky Hatton:

ROUND 1 -- Hatton charges from the opening bell. Mayweather holds the neck, and they wrestle. Both very active and mobile. Hatton lands a left hand, and so does Mayweather. Hatton trying to work inside, but Mayweather counterpunches early. Mayweather dodges, but Hatton lands a hand. Crowd roaring with every shot. Mayweather loses balance on defense, and his seven-step stumble drives the crowd mad. Hatton chases Mayweather twice into red corner. Repeated clinch, but Hatton keeps swinging one-handed. Mayweather gets a big crack, and fighters briefly scuffle at the bell. Hatton's round.

ROUND 2 -- Hatton draws another roar with a quick opening punch. Hatton wants to brawl, and Mayweather is thinking about it. Hatton charges Mayweather on the ropes, and the champion needs all of his quickness to avoid it. Referee Joe Cortez calls time, warns both fighters. Mayweather bounces and weaves, and Hatton gets a straight right in. Mayweather lands a sharp left on Hatton's nose. Cortez gives another stern lecture, fearful of a wrestling match. Both run and wrestle to the bell. Mayweather's round.

ROUND 3 -- Hatton leads with a left while striving to get inside. Mayweather sitting back, playing defense, working the body. Mayweather ducks a left hook. Another clinch. Cortez allowing Hatton greater freedom to stay inside. Hatton hugs Mayweather into ropes, and Hatton turns to Cortez -- but Mayweather lands a straight right and a shoulder shove. Mayweather ducks and dodges. Hatton is fighting a classic brawling style. Mayweather's nose is shiny, but Hatton's right eye begins to bleed. Mayweather's round.

ROUND 4 -- They trade fierce combinations in Mayweather's corner. Hatton works the body with a left, but Mayweather turns his shoulder. Hatton can't move Mayweather anywhere he doesn't want to go, and Mayweather's counterpunching has improved. Mayweather slips a straight left inside on Hatton's head. Mayweather snaps Hatton's neck twice with right hands, but Hatton stays in tight. Mayweather tattoos Hatton's face with combinations, picking at the cut. Hatton keeps charging, but Mayweather is in charge. Mayweather's round.

ROUND 5 -- Hatton charges and shoves Mayweather into the corner, but Mayweather turns his shoulder for defense. Hatton still active with combinations. Mayweather sitting back, catching a breather on the ropes. A tangle of arms and heads in the corner. Mayweather content to sit back, and Hatton gains confidence for a combination. Hatton still vulnerable to Mayweather's speedy straight hands. The fighters lock arms, and Cortez warns. Mayweather puts a glove in Hatton's face, ending a round with little activity. Hatton's round.

ROUND 6 -- Mayweather ducks underneath punches and blocks others, as usual. Hatton catches Mayweather's chin near the ropes, and the ensuing flury ends with Mayweather's upper body through the ropes. Cortez deducts a punch for a blow to the back of Mayweather's head, inciting the crowd's ire. Hatton reacts with disbelief. Another exciting combination results in little damage. Mayweather tags Hatton's chin with a straight right. The crowd produces its first anti-Cortez song of the night. They wrestle in Mayweather's corner, and Hatton plays to the crowd. Hatton is reluctant to go back to his corner at the bell. Mayweather's round.

ROUND 7 -- Mayweather dances a full circle, then wraps up Hatton's arms. More wrestling in the corner, but both come out of it punching. Mayweather tries body shots, but Hatton is too quick. Mayweather blocks a nasty-looking combination. Hatton pushes to set up shots, but Mayweather has played this game before. Hatton barely avoids a right hand. They push in the center of the ring, Hatton constantly leaning forward. Mayweather lands a snapping left hand, then chases Hatton in a classic late-round surge. Mayweather's round.

ROUND 8 -- Lots of movement, no punches landing for either fighter. Mayweather punches his way out of a clinch, then lands a sneaky right uppercut. Hatton responds admirably, but Mayweather catches Hatton flush with a straight right, sending Hatton staggering into him. Mayweather smells it, chasing him to the ropes and unloading as Hatton crouches. Hatton recovers and goes to the body as a few hundred fans chant "U-S-A!" over the English drumbeat. The fighters lean into each other. Mayweather slips inside and lands another series of shots, starting with a smashing right and punctuated by another. Mayweather unloads with a ferocity we've rarely seen from him in recent years, but Hatton stays upright. Mayweather's round.

ROUND 9 -- "Hatton Wonderland" sounds less convincing now. Hatton still charging forward, and he gets Mayweather to the ropes without landing a square punch. Mayweather sitting back, catching Hatton again with another right that's too fast to block. Mayweather turns his shoulder, then lands another right. Mayweather slaps Hatton with a left, then makes Hatton whiff on a left hook. Hatton still stalking, but Mayweather slaps at his head. Mayweather lands another straight right counterpunch, fighting confidently. Mayweather's round.

ROUND 10 -- Hatton stays aggressive, chases Mayweather, who doesn't even look winded. Out of nowhere, Mayweather floors Hatton one minute into the right with a big left hook. Hatton gets up easily, but Mayweather staggers Hatton with a left, then sends him stumbling and sprawling flat on his back in a neutral corner. Cortez ends the fight over a prone Hatton, and Mayweather leaps on the ropes. Mayweather wins, KO 10.
