The movie script is different from the novels that you read.  The story line was change just for this movie.  In Hollywood, script writers can change the story plot from any book they read, as long as they feel it will sell out to the audience.

The victims of the Plague from the unknown virus became MUTANTS from the infection.  One of  the INFECTED MUTANT GIRL  is in Will,s Lab……he is testing & experimenting on her to find the cure for the virus.

He ultimately find the Cure for the virus…….he has to stay & kill all the mutants  & commit sucide in order for the girl to Escape carrying the CURE ( blood in the container )

The title “  I am Legend  “ --- figuratively speaking means simply………..HIS LEGACY FOR FINDING THE CURE WILL LIVE FOREVER IN THE MINDS OF PEOPLE THAT HE SAVE.

Similar to Alexander Bell who invented the telephone, Bell is not a hero but created a legend for himself , his name will live forever in the minds of the people because of his invention, the telephone.
